How Wireless Charging Works

Wireless charging is a new method of charging newer mobile phones without using a cord hooked directly to your mobile phone.  Wireless charging is done using inductive charging, basically two coils that can pass an electric charge between two devices.  Not all mobile devices can be charged wirelessly, though.  If you have an iPhone 8 or later or a Samsung Galaxy S6 or later, it should be able to take a wireless charge!  The coils are hidden under the case typically in the back of the phone or mobile device.

Qi Certified Wireless Chargers

Wireless chargers can come with or without certification.  Qi is a method of certification and are tested for reliability and safety.  Qi chargers due typically cost a bit more, but the added insurance of receiving a Qi Certified device is a good confidence booster for most customers.  To simplify, it is similar to a UL certification for electronic devices.

Charging Speeds and Fast Charging

While charging speed of traditional wireless charges are typically 15% slower than traditional chargers due to efficiency of the process, recent upgrades to mobile devices and wireless charging pads have increased that speed.  Original wireless standard had 5W of charging voltage, but newer iPhone models have increased the wattage to 7.5 watts and some Samsung phones have 10 watt coils.

One of the questions we get is what happens to older 5W capacity mobile devices if put on a fast charger - the answer is they will regulate the flow and still charge at 5W.  However, as newer devices can take faster charges, providing the newer fast charging wireless pads is generally a good idea.

Why Won't My Device Charge?

One of the big problems with wireless charging is if something like a PopSocket or a phone wallet is on the back of the phone or a metal finger ring, these will block the phone from charging.  Also, if there is metal on the back of the phone, this could create a dangerous situation.  For the device to work, there needs to be a thin case or no case and nothing blocking the coils.

Wireless Power Banks

Most wireless chargers are connected by USB to a wall charger or computer to provide power to the charger.  There are, however, power banks or mobile batteries that have wireless capabilities and some that are Qi certified.  We love these new power banks, and while more expensive than desktop wireless chargers, they are very popular.  And now many power banks offer wireless and wired fast charging!  The price really depends on the size of the battery!

Conclusions

So as you can see, wireless is the trending way of charging your mobile device and there are industry rumors that to take care of some of the problems with wireless charging, new designs may include wireless charging through the front screens!  While these are not out yet, that would take care of quite a few problems!
